Consultant Endodontist

I joined the practice in 1998 as the in-house Specialist Endodontist; my expertise is in managing dental trauma, treating patients with oro-facial pain and in saving comprised teeth that might otherwise be extracted. I am a consultant at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS trust and a Professor at King’s College London Dental Institute (KCL).

In 2007 we were probably the first Endodontic practice in Europe to routinely use 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). This led to me carrying out novel clinical research at the practice resulting in a PhD ‘The use of CBCT in the management of Endodontic problems’.

My research interests reflect the interesting challenges I face in everyday practice and include factors influencing the survival of compromised teeth, root resorption, managing dental trauma, and the use of CBCT in Endodontics.

I have supervised over 50 masters and PhD research projects on varying aspects of Endodontics, dental imaging and material science at KCL. My expertise in dental imaging has resulted in me co-authoring National and European guidelines on dental imaging and root resorption in Endodontics, as well as being regularly invited to give keynote lectures both nationally and internationally. Shanon runs courses in collaboration with the British Dental Association (www.shanonpatel.com).

I have published over 100 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals, several book chapters and have co-edited/authoured 4 textbooks on Endodontics, which have been translated in to 5 different languages.
